Cannot explain how much I love this ARR masterpiece! After so many years, it still sounds so captivating!!! Have always wanted to sing this one but never did because of my language limitations :D The hindi version didn't appeal to me much because everytime a Tamil song is re-done in Hindi, the lyrics are not good enough!

This is my first attempt at a Tamil song so please bear with the diction issues :-) Thanks a lot Vishak for singing this one with me. As I always tell u, u are so pitch perfect!!!

Genda Phool...

I have started experimenting with my new recording gear and this is first song I picked. This is a favorite of my dear friend Sumita and so I sang it for her :-)

I like this song for the simplicity and the raw feel to it. I think ARR has done a brilliant job of making a folk song so appealing! When I first heard the song, I understood all of it except for the comparison of Sasural to “Genda Phool”. When I looked it up, I found this on the web :-)

“Genda Phool (Marigold) is a complex flower because its actually an inflorescence, which, by definition, is a complicated arrangement of flowers on a branch. So in the song, the girl compares her Sasural to this flower, because of all the complex relationships she shares with her Saans (Mum-in-law), Devar (Bro-in-law) and Nanand (Sis-in-law). And she says, in spite of all the troubles, she loves being there for the love of her husband.”

Prakash and I celebrate our 7th wedding anniversary tomorrow, on the 14th of Dec. On this occasion I wanted to sing something of his choice for a change :-) He is a Kishore Kumar fan and so I chose to sing something from his stable.

This song brings back a lot of wonderful memories. Prakash is not much of a singer and he just cannot remember the lyrics of a song! This was one of the very few exceptions. He used to sing (read recite :P) this one to me during our dating days, 10 yrs ago :-) And to this date, we have this song on our iPhones and love listening to it!

So sweetheart, this one is for u, for being there for me always no matter what, for putting up with my tantrums, for not complaining about my cooking ever, for supporting my music even though you are not into it, for buying me the Mac, the Logic Studio and last but not the least, for surprising me with the Apogee Duet today! You rock! And even though the lyrics of this song don’t make much sense with a female singer singing it, one line that makes perfect sense is “Pal pal dil ke paas….tum rehte ho….” :-)

Finally I get to upload a song! First it was a month long of stress at work, then a 3 week long India trip, and then a bad stint of cold and cough with a terribly nasal voice which kept me away from singing!

This is one of my very favorite songs from Fashion, the other one being Mar Jaawaan. I could not think of anyone else other than George to sing this with. I think he is our very own Mohit Chauhan :-) Hope you all like our attempt.

Kya Dekhte Ho...

This song and Pradip Somasundaran need no introduction :-)

Qurbaani was an extremely popular film during its times and had sold the most number of music records that year. It also introduced Pakistani singer “Nazia Hassan” who rendered the popular “Aap Jaisa Koi”. “Kya Dekhte Ho” was probably one of the last few duets by Asha-Rafi so it makes it even more special.

I want to thank Pradip Sir for suggesting this song and giving me an opportunity to sing this classic. Its a privilege to be singing with him! He has done a fabulous job with the mixing too as usual.

This is my first attempt at a Ghazal here. I chose one of my most favorite ones from the album Sajda by Jagjit Singh. I have heard multiple covers of this ghazal by Lata Mangeshkar, Jagjit Singh and Chitra Singh. They all have their own unique style and bring in a different feel in their attempts. For me, the highlight of this ghazal is the haunting melody, composed by Jagjit Singh himself, and the amazing lyrics.

My favorite lines are..
Ya dharti ke zakhmon par marham rakh de,
Ya mera dil paththar kar de ya Allah
......just beautiful!

AJ and I have been looking for a song a cover and we decided on this one. Its a very nice tune from a flop Bollywood film released in 1991.

The songs in the film were one of the first few songs composed by Jatin-Lalit. But this song actually became very popular after DJ Suketu released a remix version much later. We luckily found a fabulous version of the remix track. We have improvised a little, tried to the bring in some flavor from the original Jatin-Lalit composition into this one.

AJ has done a good job with the vocals and also mixed this one. He spent a lot of time on it…he wanted it to sound like the remix version with all the effects :-) Thanks AJ for all ur effort!

This one is for my friend Sumita, who asked me to sing this a long time ago, but never got the time to sing it. Its a beautiful duet by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan Sahab and Shreya Ghoshal.

I was looking for the track online and found one with Rahat Sahab’s vocals. But it was a vocal cut and was really bad. So I decided to sing those portions myself :-) I sang Rahat Sahab’s vocals in the lower octave (of course because I can’t reach the high notes!). Added some harmonies too. Mixing this one was real fun!

This is a very popular number from recent times and is one of my personal favorites too. I am a die-hard Sonu Nigam fan and this is the opening song in his concerts usually :-)

I am singing this one with Soumitra, a very talented singer here at Muziboo. When I started audio blogging last year, he was the first one to comment on my blog. He introduced me to Audio India, through which I got to know many of u from the audio blogging community! I really like this song! This one is a very peppy, happy, typical O.P.Nayyar composition. And like all his popular songs, this one is rendered by Asha. They work so well together! Her expressions and harkats in this song are amazing as always.

Here goes my last post of 2008!

Azam Khan is a singer I immensely respect in the audio blogging community. He is an excellent singer and a perfectionist who sings Rafi sahab's songs with utmost ease. So I requested Khan sahab to sing this one with me.

I personally think that Asha ji and Rafi sahab have sung the best duets ever. Raat Ke Humsafar is one such beautiful duet. From the film, An Evening in Paris (1967), this song was composed by the legendary Shankar-Jaikishen. I have watched this song innumerable number of times because I just love watching Shammi Kapoor on screen :-)

I want to thank Khan Sahab for singing this one with me and also for mixing the track. He does such a great job at it! And to all you folks out there, wish u a very very happy and prosperous 2009!

This is probably the most difficult song I have ever attempted on my blog! Composed by the multi-talented Salil Chaudhary and penned by Shailendra, this song is from the film Parakh, released in 1960.

I love this song for many reasons, the first being Lataji's divine voice and the second being the leading lady, Sadhana's beauty on screen, singing this song. Several talented singers in the audio blogging community have sung this song before and done complete justice to it. Here is my humble attempt at this masterpiece! Bhupen Hazarika is well known for his unique use of folk music in his compositions. In addition to composing and singing in various languages including Hindi and Bengali, he is also a very talented lyricist. He is a recepient of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for his achievements in Indian cinema.

This song is my favorite Bhupen Hazarika composition from the film Rudaali. It has beautiful lyrics penned by Gulzar sahab and the golden voice of Lataji. Here is my humble attempt to sing this wonderful composition.

If it was an O.P.Nayyar composition, it had to be Asha's voice! Such was the magic they created together. O.P.Nayyar ji had a very unique style....his songs are pure, romantic, happy numbers. Even after so many years, his songs continue to mesmerize us!

This magical combination gave Bollywood many many beautiful songs in films like Kashmir Ki Kali, Mere Sanam, Phir Wohi Dil Laya Hoon, to name a few. Isharon Isharon from Kashmir Ki Kali remains one of my all time favorites. I would love to sing that too sometime...

Here I have tried to sing Jaaiye Aap Kahan... from the film Mere Sanam. The same film has another beautiful song Pukarta Chala Hu Main.... which I am hoping my fellow blogger, Azam will sing some day! Khan Sahab... please consider this my farmaish :-)

It's my privilege to be singing the songs of one of our most talented new generation female playback singers in Bollywood...Shreya Ghoshal. I first heard her when she was a participant in Sa Re Ga Ma long time ago and I thought to myself...what a divine voice! It was'nt a surprise that she won the contest and went on to become the most successful playback singer of today. She is one of the few singers who can sing any song with utmost ease. The other singers I can think of are Sonu Nigam and Sunidhi Chauhan...again both my favorites!

This song is from the movie Jism, which earned Shreya a Filmfare award and lots of fame. Composed my M.M.Kreem, each song in this movie has a calmness to it, be it "Chalo Tumko Lekar..." or "Awarapan...".

Here is my attempt to sing "Chalo Tumko Lekar...", my personal favorite from the movie and also one of Shreya's best renditions. I would like to dedicate this song to my friend, Anushree, who has been diligently following my blog and has been sending me song requests. Its like I am on a recording spree!!! Its addictive I must say :-) But the only problem is I cannot sing any song of my choice. I have a limited number of tracks and I need to choose from them.

The next song I chose to sing is a really old one. From the film Dil Apna Aur Preet Parayi, this song has vocals by Lataji and music by Shankar-Jaikishen. Every time I listen to this song, I am reminded of Meena Kumari. She looks divine in this song.

The beauty of this song lies in its simplicity, and thats the challenge too...maintaining that simplicity.

Asha....my Goddess...

I have been listening to songs by Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhonsle since I was a kid. And I have been more of an Asha fan all along. That doesn't mean I am not a Lata fan. I worship her...but there is some thing about Asha ji's voice that is magical. Her versatility is mind blowing!

So I could not stop myself from trying one of her songs. This one is again a favorite. Composed by Bappi Lahiri, who has given us lots of peppy numbers, this song has Asha's magical touch.

This is a duet, but well...I sang it all. Let me know what you think...

My first recording!!!

I have not been blogging for a long time now! Work has been stopping me from finding time to do it. But I can proudly say that I have been attending my music classes regularly and am enjoying it thoroughly!

In the meantime, I have also been to lucky to have laid my hands on some karaoke tracks to sing with. Yes...I have started my attempt at recording songs and I am loving it completely. I must add that its not as easy as I thought it would be. Singing with the track is one part of the process and mixing it is another part, both of which I need to master. I hope to get better with time....

This my humble attempt to sing one of my favorite songs, sung by the Goddess herself...Lata Mangeshkar. Its from the movie Lekin. Penned by Gulzar and composed by Hridayanath Mangeshkar, this song is a treat to the ears.

I want to dedicate this song to my dearest friend, Sumita. She has patiently listened to it several times and given me feedback....so sweetheart....this is for u!

My first encounter with classical Music

I was about 6-7 yrs old when one morning, my mom woke me up and told me I was supposed to meet somebody. I was taken to my first music teacher's house. She was a south indian and had been giving music lessons to kids for a long time. I was told that I would be learning classical music from her. I had no idea what was in store.

I went for my first music lesson. My teacher had a "Sruthippetti" (an instrument that looks like a harmonium but has no keys, has knobs which can be used to set the scale for singing). She set a scale which she thought was appropriate and asked me to sing "Sa....". I sang it. She then asked me to sing "Pa..." and then "Sa..." again. I obeyed, not knowing what it really meant.

Much later, I realized that I was taught the basic notes of music. The Sargam consists of seven notes "S R G M P D N", of which "S" and "P" are the "Shuddha Swaras" i.e. no matter how the rest of the notes change depending on the raaga, "S" and "P" will remain where they are. Therefore it is essential that one understands the exact position of these notes in the Sargam. The first "S" marks the beginning of the octave and the second "S" marks its end and "P" falls in between

Once I could sing "S P S", I was taught the other notes of the Sargam. So all you guys out there wanting to learn classical music, get your Shuddha Swaras perfected first!

A new beginning....

Its been a really long time since I have been thinking of this...creating a space of my own where I can pen down my thoughts on something that matters the most to me....Music! I dont know why it took so long....but well...better late than never I guess!

Why am I calling this a new beginning? Because it is in fact a new beginning to my life...I've made a solid decision to bring music back into my life, and have already taken the first step towards it. I am thrilled to have found a maestro as my Guru and I am sure my life is going to change in a melodious way!
